Dr. Richard Jackson, Host of PBS Series “Designing Healthy Communities”, to Deliver Keynote at Environmental Design Research Associations 2013 Conference

McLean, VA (PRWEB) March 07, 2013

The Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) is pleased to announce that Richard J. Jackson, MD, MPH, Professor and Chair of the Environmental Health Sciences Department at UCLA’s Fielding School of Public Health, will present the keynote address at EDRA44Providence on May 30, 2013 at the Omni Providence Hotel.

Richard Jackson has done extensive work in the impact of the environment on health, particularly relating to children, and previously chaired the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Environmental Health. He worked to reduce pesticide threats in California, and has expertise in epidemiology, infectious diseases, toxicology and leadership. Over the past decade much of Jacksons work has focused on how the built environment affects health. He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Architects and is an elected honorary member of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Currently, Dr. Jackson has been working on policy analyses of environmental impacts on health ranging from toxicology, chemical body burdens, terrorism, sustainability, climate change, urban design and architecture.

Public health has traditionally associated the built environment with issues such as poor sanitation, lead paint poisoning children, workplace safety, fire codes and access for persons with disabilities. Realizing that how we design the built environment may hold tremendous potential for addressing many of the nations childhood and adult current public health concerns, Dr. Jackson will share best practice design alternatives that can sharpen policymakers’ thinking in how they look at their communities today.

With the theme of Healthy + Healing Places, EDRA44Providence has a special focus on health policy implications for environmental design in addition to promoting the value of research for advancing environmental design and theory building. Educational sessions will present cutting-edge research and collaboration in a variety of topic areas including healthcare environments, workplace environments, school and educational environments and environments for aging populations. The sessions provide students, researchers and practitioners alike the opportunity to participate in a collaborative discourse. Conference attendees include architects, urban planners, designers, social ecologists, urban anthropologists, researchers, consultants, policymakers, academics and students from around the world.
