Passages Malibu Warns of Rising ER Visits Linked to Energy Drinks

Energy drinks like Red Bull, 5-Hour Energy, and Monster are more popular than ever and with growing popularity they are increasingly being linked to a rise in hospitalizations.

The Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration reported roughly 10,000 ER visits associated with energy drinks in 2007, with that number reaching more than 20,000 per year by 2011, a 36% increase from the previous year. Data from 2012 is not yet available.

Motocross competitor Matthew Penbross was recently profiled in a February 4th, 2013 report in Chemical and Engineering News. The 28 year-old Australian awoke the morning of a race hoping to improve his reaction speed, giving himself a competitive edge. Over the course of a seven-hour period, Penbross drank eight Red Bulls, and after crossing the finish line, following his second race of the day, his heart stopped.

Doctors concluded that with no family history of heart disease, the excessive amount of caffeine energy drinks were the likely cause.

In the final months of 2012, the New York Times reported that the U.S. Food & Drug Administration began investigating reports of [five deaths linked to Monster Energy drinks and 13 deaths linked to 5-Hour Energy shots.
